Do the Opposite - March Update & Recommendations
Hello everyone,
Welcome to the newest issue of Do the Opposite. Now sent every Monday!
Quick announcement:
Last week I've sent a newsletter as well but there is a high chance it ended up in your Spam folder. If that's the case, I hope you give that one a read too and I hope there is something useful in there for you! :) Also asking for a small favour - please drag that message into "Inbox", so that it will be more likely to go there into the correct folder the future.
Resources:
If you're interested in learning foreign languages, I want to recommend you this website (they also have apps):
https://lingvist.com
I've tried many different apps for this purpose, but since I've discovered Lingvist, it's always been on top of my list. It takes you way further than Duolingo does, in my opinion. The only caveat is that they don't have as many languages available to learn. Other than that, it's amazing - it takes a 'mathematical' approach to teaching you the language, using statistics, cognitive science theory, spaced repetition and more.
When they give you a word to learn, it's always in the context of a phrase. The audios are sorted by the percentage of the words you know in them. So on top there might be an audio which states that 'You know 85% of the words in this audio". Spaced repetition is cleverly used to maximize the value of the time you spend in the app, testing you more often on the words you have the most trouble remembering. I always recommend this to everyone who asks me in person, but thought I'd share this here as well :)
You can use the web app version of it, as well as the mobile apps (available for both Android and iPhone).

Quote:
All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it's impossible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth. Develop the strength to do bold things, not the strengths to suffer.
