Discomfort Academy #88
How to Embrace Discomfort for Growth, When to Go ALL IN, Living on Half Your Income
Good News Everyone!
Welcome to the newest issue of Discomfort Academy newsletter!
If you want to share any resources (articles, videos, books or anything else) with the community or any feedback with me, reply to this email with your recommendations.
Hey there, it’s been a minute since the last newsletter issue, but I’ve found some good resources to share with you!
Earlier this year I’ve had the opportunity to be a guest on The Scrimba Podcast. Scrimba is a learning platform where you can improve your coding skills. The episode ended up being code-adjacent but more focused on embracing discomfort, building habits, beating the Resistance to work on important projects, and answering the question: “How can someone learn to do hard things consistently?”
Huge thanks to Alex Booker for getting me on the podcast! He totally gets what we talk about here on Discomfort Academy and it was a pleasure talking with him.
Check it out below!
P.S. I’m trying something new with this newsletter issue: the photo attachment is now AI generated. This is to easily differentiate between issues visually, otherwise they all just have the DA logo on them. I haven’t found a perfect solution yet - I think I just want some gradient abstractions and that’s it, but for this issue I went with a Ghibli studio animation style workspace. If you know a good AI generator for that purpose, just reply to this email with your suggestion and thanks in advance!
Videos
This time I am happy to report that I have discovered a couple of less-known (yet) YouTube channels that are absolute hidden gems, and I’m going to share them with you below.
Signs It's Time To Go ALL IN | Linval Williams
When you need a dose of motivation to get your sh*t together, look no further than Linval’s channel. I accidentally stumbled upon it and I’ve been blown away by the amount of wisdom this guy has at such a young age. Linval has a set of principles he lives by and it deeply resonates with me. He talks about being accountable, growing wealth, building discipline and much more. Here’s a bonus video if you like the main one shared here.
Honest Advice After Living Off Half My Income For A Decade | Brian Farrell
A big theme we talk about here at Discomfort Academy is personal finance and wealth building. I found a very inspiring channel where Brian talks about these topics. His life has not been easy (he’s a cancer survivor and had lost of other issues: career burnout, learning disabilities, etc), but because of that exact reason he has a lot of wisdom to offer. Brian shows that you can overcome many initial setbacks in life and still come out on the top. I think I’ve watched if not all but the majority of the videos on his channel.
Quotes
“A river of material flows through us. When we share our works and our ideas, they are replenished. If we block the flow by holding them all inside, the river cannot run and new ideas are slow to appear.
In the abundant mindset, the river never runs dry. Ideas are always coming through. And an artist is free to release them with the faith that more will arrive.
If we live in a mindset of scarcity, we hoard great ideas.”
— Rick Rubin, “The Creative Act: A Way of Being”
“The magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding”
— Dipen Parmar
“It does not take much strength to do things, but it requires a great deal of strength to decide what to do.”
— Elbert Hubbard
Ruby wine is drunk by knaves,
Sugar spends to fatten slaves,
Rose and vine-leaf deck buffoons;
Thunderclouds are Jove's festoons,
Drooping oft in wreaths of dread
Lightning-knotted round his head;
The hero is not fed on sweets,
Daily his own heart he eats;
Chambers of the great are jails,
And head-winds right for royal sails.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
